So, this past weekend I went to see the amazing Brandi Carlile in NJ. Just. Amazing.
You just don't get much better than a chick and her band who are going to sing almost every song off their new album, a few of their past album highlights, and cover Patsy Cline, Bob Dylan, Tears for Fears, and Johnny Cash.
Here's a lovely highlight from the actual show (yay for illegal taping!). Dying Day is my favorite track from Brandi's new album so I just quite giddy when the band unplugged themselves and stepped to the front of the stage.
On the actual album:
I left home a long, long time ago
in a tin can for the road
with a suitcase and some songs
Chasing miles through the nighttime making tracks
with no time for looking back
to the place where I belong
How these days grow long
but I'm on my way back home
It's been hard to be away
How I miss you
and I just want to kiss you
and I'm gonna love you till my dying day
How these days grow long
When you're sad,
you know I wish I could be there
to make your sorrows disappear
and set your troubles free
It's not fair for me to be this far from you
but I promise to stay true
wherever I might be
Time keeps burning
The wheels keep on turning sometimes
I feel I'm wasting my day
How I miss you
and I just want to kiss you
and I'm gonna love you till my dying day
How these days grow long
Time keeps burning on
How these days grow long
Now I'm lost in a sea of sunken dreams
while the sound of drunken screams
echoes in the night
But I know all of this will come to pass
and I'll be with you at last
forever by your side
How these days grow long
but I'm on my way back home
It's been hard to be away
How I miss you
and I just want to kiss you
and I'm gonna love you till my dying day
And time keeps burning
The wheels keep on turning sometimes
I feel I'm wasting my day
How I miss you
and I just want to kiss you
and I'm gonna love you till my dying day
How these days grow long
Time keeps burning on
How these days grow long
—Brandi Carlile, Dying Day
And from a show in Portland, Oregon:
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world . . . world
Enlarge your world
Mad world
—Tears for Fears, Mad World
